Biography

Yana Oleksandrivna Shemaieva, born 21 October 1995 in Vasylkiv, a small city just outside Kyiv. Parents are private traders - no connection to music. They still enrolled their daughter in music school at age three. She studied there for twelve years, until fifteen.

Then the R. Glier Kyiv Institute of Music (choral conducting) and the National Music Academy (Tchaikovsky Conservatory). She left the conservatory after the second year. Chose her own route.

The stage name came at 15. She registered on VKontakte as Jerry Mouse after the Tom and Jerry character. Then changed Mouse to Heil - went to a website with American surnames, liked the sound of it. She later described the whole backstory as "moronic". The name stuck anyway.

Early career: covers, YouTube and Vakarchuk

2012 - YouTube channel. Covers of Okean Elzy, The Hardkiss, Twenty One Pilots, Kodaline. Simple, no budget, just voice and a backing track. Sviatoslav Vakarchuk - frontman of Okean Elzy - regularly reshared her covers of his band's songs and publicly endorsed them. Not a networking move: the leader of one of Ukraine's biggest rock bands just noticed something in a girl from Vasylkiv.

2017 - signed with Vidlik Records, the label behind ONUKA. Its founders Yevhen Filatov and Nata Zhyzhchenko (ONUKA vocalist) connected with Yana after she started looking for producers for her song De Miy Dim (Where's My Home). The debut EP De Miy Dim came out that October - four songs.

2018 - X-Factor. Performed an acapella medley of Oleh Vynnyk songs. Four yeses from the judges. Left after the first bootcamp challenge. Went back to music on her own terms.

Okhrana Otmiena and the breakthrough

March 2019. She posted a snippet of a new song on Instagram. The track Okhrana Otmiena, recorded with producer Morphom. NK, Vera Brezhneva and others immediately shared the clip. Full version on YouTube - over 14 million views. Top five in Ukrainian charts.

The genre she defined herself: «побутовий поп» (household pop). Everyday life, irony, recognisable situations. No grand statements, no big narratives - just the things around you. That's what resonated.

September-October 2019 - debut full-length album #Ya Yana. Eight songs, hits Vilna Kasa, Natverkay, Bili Krosy. Her position in Ukrainian pop was set.

Eurovision: two attempts and third place

2020 - first national selection. Song Vegan, sixth place in the final. 2022 - second attempt with When God Shut the Door, third place. Closer, still not a win.

2024 was different. Together with rapper alyona alyona she entered the national selection with Teresa & Maria. 4 February 2024 - they won the final. 7 May - qualified from the first semi-final. 11 May, Malmö - third place in the Grand Final with 453 points. Teresa & Maria passed 50 million streams on Spotify.

2025 - returned to Eurovision as a guest performer and announced Ukraine's points. 2026 - back in the national selection with CATHARTICUS (prayer). Eurovision World fan polls put her as the favourite to win.

ARKHETYPY (ARCHETYPES) (2 May 2025) - third studio album, 16 tracks. Biggest song: Z Yakoho Ty Poverhu Neba? (Which Floor of Heaven Are You From?) feat. YARMAK - 4.5 million Spotify streams and 10 million YouTube views.

Singles 2025 - Sing Like A Siren (duet with Within Temptation), Dodayte Huchnosti (12 points), VYMOLVYV, ROZCHYNYAYUS feat. Yevhen Khmara.

Concerts

After Eurovision 2024 - tour of Ukraine and Europe: Germany, Czech Republic, UK, Slovakia, Poland. Those concerts featured exclusive premieres of songs from the forthcoming ARKHETYPY album - first performances of new material for live audiences.
